About Nanna's Lap

Welcome

There are over 4,000 trans-racial adoptions just in the Greater Philadelphia region.  Many of these parents are unfamiliar with the culture of the children which they are adopting.  In addition, there are thousands of foster children that are placed in families from other cultures.  Those families will need help learning the culture of the children in their care.

Nanna’s Lap helps foster- and adoptive-parents of children from different ethnic backgrounds become better parents.  We offer a cultural training program to help the parents learn about the culture of their children including hair care, clothing, and all forms of cultural learning.

We build confidence in the parents so that they can better address the needs of children from a different ethnic background.  We instill cultural pride and self-esteem in the children by helping them learn their culture and successfully blend it in with their new families.

Vision

This Art form will engage both parent and child to transform a mindset that restricts natural healthy expressions of hair styling and designing.

Who is Kim?

As a child, Kim was bullied within her own biological family dynamic relating to her hair. When a family member became a foster parent, she gained exposure to the adoptive and foster care systems as she noticed a surge in trans-racial adoptions and decided to be proactive. There was a commonality she noticed with Brown Babies with caregivers/parents that are culturally different.

Aesthetic Cultural Self Esteem was not being addressed in relation to the children’s need and how they want to feel regarding their hair and skin. The vision of Nanna’s Lap is about the children building strong emotional family bonds and loving who they are Naturally!

Kim Rollins is a licensed Cosmetologist in two states with over 25 years of experience, and an Entrepreneur of many facets.
